Praxiology starts from the point of view of effectiveness. It has three components: analysis of concepts involving purposive actions; critique of modes of action from the viewpoint of efficiency; and normative advisory aspects in recommendations for increasing human efficiency. The third volume of this series aims to make more visible to the English readership the importance of design throughout the many disciplines, professions, and arenas of human endeavor. Design is a pervasive part of our daily lives to such an extent that it goes largely unnoticed. It has become a near invisible aspect of our civilized existence. But when we stop for a moment to study an artifact, activity, group, and institution, or any entity or life process, we can begin to see and imagine the design, the designing, and the human designers who contributed to it. Design and Systems represents a set of contributions made to the methodological study of design. Times of Creative Destruction is about the years that followed the end of WWII, one of the most seminal and dramatic epochs in human history, during which extraordinary star-buildings were born, cities exploded, and an unprecedented world of a ‘Third Ecology’ emerged. Never before was there such a flurry of daring mega-constructions, such daring spatial acrobatics, ‘star’ buildings by star architects attained by star developers, mega-constructions, technological feats, and flourishing spatial acrobatics. But, for all its exhilarating creativity, this was also an era of unanticipated, intractable, irreversible destruction reducing the uniqueness and diversity of cultural, social and ecological peaks and valleys of our world, to a ‘desert flatland’, environmental inequality and unhappiness. Design research.
This Festschrift is a collection of essays in honor of Jean-Pierre Protzen on the occasion of his 75th birthday.
Many business corporations are faced with the challenge of bringing together quite different types of knowledge in design processes: knowledge of different disciplines in the natural and engineering sciences, knowledge of markets and market trends, knowledge of political and juridical affairs. This also means a challenge for design methodology as the academic discipline that studies design processes and methods. The aim of the NATO ARW of which this book is the report was to bring together colleagues from different academic fields to discuss this increasing multidisciplinarity in the relationship between design and sciences. This multidisciplinarity made the conference a special event. At a certain moment one of the participants exclaimed: "This is not a traditional design methodology conference!" Throughout the conference it was evident that there was a need to develop a common language and understanding to enable the exchange of different perspectives on design and its relationship with science. The contributions that have been included in this book show these different perspectives: the philosophical, the historical, the engineering perspective and the practical designer's experience.
