The aim of this project was to develop and evaluate high-strength steel sheet products where the hardening introduced during cold rolling is retained to a significant degree by incomplete recrystallisation, a treatment that has been termed 'back-annealing'. The investigation included a wide range of low carbon and stainless steels. An initial round robin exercise helped to coordinate the experimental procedure in the different partners' laboratories. This phase of the work also revealed that only very modest improvements in the strength-ductility balance are possible when using simple, low-strength steel compositions. Further development was therefore directed towards back-annealing of more complex steel grades, having incompletely recrystallised ferrite matrices, including: - micro-alloyed steels containing niobium or titanium to provide precipitation hardening; - dual phase steels having martensite as a second phase; - TRIP steels having austenite as a second phase; - stainless steels with both traditional chemistries and new high Mn-N variants. Significant improvements were obtained in the combination of strength and formability from tensile tests in several of these cases. In particular, it appears that bending and hole flanging properties can be improved for high strength sheet. Fatigue strength was improved for the stainless steel but apparently not for the back-annealed dual phase steel. Computer modelling has been developed to predict annealing kinetics and mechanical behaviour of the heat treated products. Depending on the applications, the approaches were chosen to be either physical/analytical or artificial neural network models.

Advanced high strength steels (AHSSs) for auto-making are primarily produced by rolling, plus heat treatment technologies if necessary. However, due to the metallurgical complexity of AHSSs, it is impossible to roll all of the AHSS grades in a rolling mill with the same rolling technology. Each of AHSSs has unique applications in vehicles, and specified rolling technologies are required to produce high quality AHSS products where they might be the best employed to meet performance demands of the automotive parts. The automotive industry requirements for vehicle weight reduction, weight containment, improved part functionality and passenger safety have resulted in the increased use of steel grades with a fully martensitic microstructure. These steel grades are essential to improve the anti-intrusion resistance of automotive body parts and the related passenger safety during car collisions. Standard advanced high strength steel (AHSS) grades are notoriously difficult to be formed by cold stamping; they are characterized by elastic springback, poor stretch flangeability and low hole expansion ratios. Hot stamping has therefore received much attention recently as an alternative technology to produce AHSS automotive parts.In this book, selected articles from the Fourth International Conference on Advanced High Strength Steel and Press Hardening held on August 20-22th, 2018 in Hefei, China, are compiled. It focuses on AHSS for the development of press hardening of high performance sheet metal for lightweight vehicle, advanced digital manufacturing technology, as well as the physical metallurgy principles of the hot stamping process.Aiming at the process design and industrial application for hot stamping of press hardened steel and high strength aluminium alloy sheet, the effect of temperature and strain rate on the formability and mechanical properties of the products is discussed.
