We had decided to charge others the nominal sum of twenty-five cents for the book. Our mailing list includes the names of all who have ever sent to us for a catalog. Among these are some peo ple, we are sure, who have no real interest in the Peony. We know of one person who sent for a book so that the children might cut out the pictures. Now we cannot afford to send so expensive a book broadcast. But we do want it to go wherever it will serve to create interest in the Peony, and we have decided to continue sending it free of charge to all who ask for it. Your copy has cost us fifty cents. We prob ably send out each year $2, 000. 00 worth of books from which we never' receive any return. Now if you do not decide to send us an order, will you not hand your cata log to some friend who 18 likely to be interested m it. It is invaluable for giving masses of color in the mixed shrubbery and perennial border. Single plants or groups of plants, according to the size of the border, should be scattered here and there in front of large shrubs and tall perennials or among low ones. It furnishes fine specimen plants for the lawn if properly cared for. It makes a good border for walks and driveways and for division lines of lots. Plants of one variety are most effective for this pur pose, as they are of the same height and come into bloom at one time. But if space is limited and one plans to put the most of his collection into such a hedge, he will get more pleasure out of a mixed planting.
