This handbook constitutes a single collection of well researched articles and essays on African politics, governance and development from the pre-colonial through colonial to the post-colonial eras. Over the course of these interconnected periods, African politics have evolved with varied experiences across different parts of the continent. As politics is embedded both in the economy and the society, Africa has witnessed some changes in politics, economics, demography and its relations with the world in ways that requires in-depth analysis. This work provides an opportunity for old and new scholars to engage in the universe of the debate around African politics, governance and development and will serve as a ready reference material for students, researchers, policy makers and investors that are concerned with these issues.
With his lift stuck in a rut, it took a breakup to make Chris realised he had not been in control of his life for the last forty years. Now living the life he had spent so long dreaming about, suddenly he was the prime suspect in a double murder that he couldn’t have committed. Should he stay to defend himself or spend the rest of his life on the run, hoping that the police would someday find evidence that pointed to someone else.
The studies presented in this volume focus on two distinct but related areas of specialized communication professional and academic settings, resting on an anti-essentialist notion of identity as a phenomenon that emerges from the dialectic between individual and society. The authors start from a detailed analysis of discourse practices as evidenced in texts, their production and the professional performance patterns which underlie such practices, and explore the way the actors, roles and identities are constructed in language and discourse. In particular, by highlighting discursive attitudes and aptitudes, they underscore the need to understand discourse in light of norms of professional responsibility, showing that not only do professionals and academics use discourse to create self-identity, but they also use identity constructed through discourse to influence society.
Mary Venner gave up a secure job and travelled to the other side of the world to work in foreign aid. Her work took her to places that are now daily headline news, including Ukraine, Afghanistan and Somalia. Where Are You This Time? provides a first-hand account of what life is like in these countries. With a wry sense of humour it describes the strange working conditions, the challenges of economic development, and the lively social life of expats living in places that tourists avoid. ‘…an important read for anyone hoping to work in development consulting or better understand it.’—Gordon Peake, DevPolicyBlog
Sasha Andromeda by Paul D. Escudero The sequel to Jeeapa, Sasha Andromeda continues with issues concerning Earth’s galactic quarantine prompting the Mergenky alien race to send a mission to the Andromeda Galaxy to intervene. Due to Mergenky concern about the priority of this mission, they send the same crew that figured so heavily in the Jeeapa campaign. When traveling so far away to uncharted worlds normally beyond the reach, the crew’s challenges are compounded by the corruption of the ship’s computer that takes on a human psychology and puts the entire mission at risk.
