This is an interview study of anti-sexist men who are engaged in dissident masculinity politics in their everyday lives. I discuss the importance of adopting a cultural analysis that looks at practices and discourse and the importance of drawing upon a more expanded definition of agency than is often used in studies of gendering practices and the practicing of gender. I find that there is a common set of experiences and relationships that supported the men's anti-sexism and made it more likely. I also find that they are engaged in a range of degendering and regendering practices in their attempts to renounce hegemonic expectations for what it means to be men. These practices pose personal and collective possibilities for change. The men draw upon at least two vocabularies of motives: therapeutic and social justice. The kind of change they attempt to produce depends on the vocabulary upon which they draw. The therapeutic vocabulary encouraged a focus on meeting "needs" and promoting mutual personal growth within relationships, and it discouraged men from developing political projects that make them feel guilty. The social justice vocabulary encouraged a focus on producing equity or equality within relationships, and it also encouraged them to develop more explicitly political stances that had the potential to broaden the scope of their attempts at change beyond their individual relationships. I also look at the parenting practices of a set of fathers, noting the importance of degendered parenting.
De-Gendering Gendered Occupations brings together contributions from researchers on language and gender studies and workplace discourse to unpack and challenge hegemonic gendered norms encoded in what are traditionally considered female occupations. This book explores how feelings about gender have changed over three interrelated generations of women and men of different social classes during the twentieth century. The author explores the ways in which generational experiences are connected, what is continued, what triggers gradual or abrupt changes between generations - and between women and men within these generations. The book explores how new feelings of gender gradually change gender norms from within, and how they contribute to the incremental creation of new social practices.​​​ Nielsen suggests a new way of conducting psychosocial research that focuses on generational psychological patterns of gender identities and gendered subjectivities in times of change from a psychoanalytic perspective. Combining generational and longitudinal research, the book works with temporality as a theoretical as well as a methodological dimension. Theoretically it combines Raymond Williams' idea of "a structure of feeling" with the work of Eric Fromm, Hans Loewald, Nancy Chodorow and Jessica Benjamin.

This volume of Political and Military Sociology focuses on the perceptions and identities of those serving in the military, using survey or interview data to explore those perceptions. A range of military forces are examined, including those of the United States, Israel, Norway, and Denmark.The first article, using survey data from Denmark, compares the views of Danish soldiers to civilians. The second article looks at the effects of military education upon the attitudes and values of soldiers. The third article explores Israeli soldiers' attitudes regarding formal military education. The fourth article addresses the impact of Norwegian soldiers' self-identity on military performance.In a different vein, the survey results of the fifth article show that support for soldiers on active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan does not necessarily translate into support for veterans. As the field of translation studies has developed, translators and translation scholars have become more aware of the unacknowledged ideologies inherent both in texts themselves and in the mechanisms that affect their circulation. This book both analyses the translation of queerness and applies queer thought to issues of translation. It sheds light on the manner in which heteronormative societies influence the selection, reading and translation of texts and pays attention to the means by which such heterosexism might be subverted. It considers the ways in which queerness can be repressed, ignored or made invisible in translation, and shows how translations might expose or underline the queerness – or the homophobic implications – of a given text.
