A curious little fish flies through the ocean, and although he is curious to know lots of things, what most interests him is the colour of the sea. Intrigued by the mystery, he asks the night, the moon, the stars that twinkle in the sky, the sun that sheds light on everything, the other fish, the old turtle, the enormous shark… but each of them says a different colour, depending on how they see it. In his desire to know the answer, the little fish makes friends with a boy who is playing on the beach making sandcastles. And then, at last, the boy’s smile lets him see the “true” colour of the sea. This story is a snippet of what the sea represents and what it gives us. Of its immense variety of fish, of the different inhabitants its waters cross, of the glints of light and the whiteness of its water when it turns to foam… It is an invitation to love and care for the sea!
¿Por qué el mar es azul? Pero en primer lugar, ¿siempre es azul, o rojo, o negro? Y si es azul, ¿lo es por el reflejo del cielo, por el color de su fondo, por alguna sustancia colorante, por las plantas o animales que lo habitan, o simplemente por el color del agua? En este caso, ¿por qué el agua es azul? ¿Cabe suponer que lo es a causa de la luz? Este elemento líquido nos parece banal porque nos es familiar. La paradoja reside en que esa misma familiaridad oculta en qué medida ese compuesto químico es realmente algo extraordinario. Sabemos que el agua es esencial para el desarrollo de la vida en la Tierra, y es debido a sus excepcionales cualidades como molécula química. En el libro se analiza este líquido elemento, no sólo desde el punto de vista biológico, sino también en cuanto a sus propiedades físicas que le confieren el famoso y característico color azul. Se hace una revisión de las distintas hipótesis planteadas por el mundo científico, de forma que mediante la duda sistemática de las explicaciones que surgen con estas hipótesis, se puede llegar a una explicación, necesariamente provisional, que podrá ser cuestionada en un futuro.
