In 2001, Allison Orr made a dance with 13 City of Austin firefighters. Over the next 20 years, her unique practice of collaborating with city employees flowered into civic storytelling through movement at public pools, tableaus of power line workers shimmying up 40' poles in front of 5000 people, and intricate choreography of trash trucks on a misty tarmac. Part memoir, part guide, the artist reflects on her major collaborations and shares interviews with people she's made dances with over the past two decades. Power line workers, sanitation workers, and firefighters reflect on their memories of performing with Forklift and the lasting impact those dances made. Alongside larger conversations in the arts, Orr offers a look at how to create community-based art projects, how the creative process can bring people together to address civic issues, and the beauty of choreographing the day to day. An appendix and online companion include budget information, full cast and crew lists, participant survey results, and more.

Case studies examining the individual’s role in how traditional Chinese performing arts like music and dance are represented, maintained, and cultivated. Faces of Tradition in Chinese Performing Arts examines the key role of the individual in the development of traditional Chinese performing arts such as music and dance. These artists and their artistic works—the “faces of tradition” —come to represent and reconfigure broader fields of cultural production in China today. The contributors to this volume explore the ways in which performances and recordings, including singing competitions, textual anthologies, ethnographic videos, and CD albums, serve as discursive spaces where individuals engage with and redefine larger traditions and themselves. This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2013. The chapters in this book provide an overview of both global and interdisciplinary perspectives on Writing. In an era when technology in general and social media in particular has appeared to overtaken academic discussion in regard to how we communicate; the thoughts, research and praxes in this volume reveal that while the concept of writing has changed dramatically in the past decades, the flow of words on a page or computer screen as a large flow of text still remains one of the key forms in which humans are able to crystallize thoughts. Each chapter reveals a particular facet of this process, revealing that it is only through the crafting process of producing words through the conduit of head to heart to hand that we can create and understand the external composite of internal creativity and reveal the power of human reflection. What and how artists and educators have thought and gone through to keep their field sustained should be disseminated as a mutual learning to enhance our awareness on arts and design sustainability and role during pandemic. ICADE 5 aims to bring together leading academic artists, arts and design researchers and scholars to exchange and share their notion, experiences, and research results on all aspects of Digital Media Literacy and Mastery in Arts and Design education during pandemic and its urgencies after pandemics. It also provides a premier interdisciplinary platform for arts and design researchers, practitioners, and educators to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted which involves digital media literacy or mastery in the fields of Arts and Design education. The 5th International Conference on Arts and Design Education (ICADE) is a conference hosted by Faculty of Arts and Design Education Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. This conference will be held on September 22nd, 2022 through Zoom Webinar. ICADE has covered a broad range of topic on music, dance, drama, visual arts, visual communication design, arts education, film and television, and multidiciplinary arts fields. Music represents one of humanity's most vivid contemplations on the nature of time itself. The ways that music can modify, intensify, and even dismantle our understanding of time's passing is at the foundation of musical experience, and is common to listeners, composers, and performers alike. The Oxford Handbook of Time in Music provides a range of compelling new scholarship that examines the making of musical time, its effects and structures. Bringing together philosophical, psychological, and socio-cultural understandings of time in music, the chapters highlight the act of 'making' not just as cultural construction but also in terms of the perceptual, cognitive underpinnings that allow us to 'make' sense of time in music.
