As many individuals throughout the world, from varying backgrounds move for different reasons, whether it be economic and educational necessity or as a refugee or exile, to many countries of the West, most notably the United States, the phenomenon of culture shock, assimilation, exilic status, and trauma is becoming ever more prevalent in Western societies, a growing interest and necessity of this type of study is becoming ever more important. This book discusses the concepts of exile, trauma, and nostalgia and explains how they all come together to create a sense of culture shock for four influential and quintessential Iranian-American women; women who exemplify, in many cases, the experiences of a number of Iranian exiles. Azar Nafisi, Nahid Rachlin, Tara Bahrampour, and Azadeh Moaveni, despite their different life experiences and ages, all encountered culture shock as it related to male-female relations, Iranian gender norms and issues of sex and sexuality and treatments and views of the female body as it relates to reproduction. With the current state of affairs, it is important to study and understand many of these important issues, especially as it relates to immigration.
As far back as she can remember, Azadeh Moaveni has felt at odds with her tangled identity as an Iranian-American. In suburban America, Azadeh lived in two worlds. At home, she was the daughter of the Iranian exile community, serving tea, clinging to tradition, and dreaming of Tehran. The Iranian revolution of 1978–1979 uprooted and globally dispersed an enormous number of Iranians from all walks of life. Bitter political relations between Iran and the West have since caused those immigrants to be stigmatized, marginalized, and politicized, which, in turn, has discredited and distorted Iranian migrants’ social identity; subjected them to various subtle and overt forms of prejudice, discrimination, and social injustice; and pushed them to the edges of their host societies. The Iranian Diaspora presents the first global overview of Iranian migrants’ experiences since the revolution, highlighting the similarities and differences in their experiences of adjustment and integration in North America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East. Written by leading scholars of the Iranian diaspora, the original essays in this volume seek to understand and describe how Iranians in diaspora (re)define and maintain their ethno-national identity and (re)construct and preserve Iranian culture.
