Jack is lost. Yet Tabitha will not give up on him, even if the rescue means entering a demonic dimension... First, she must reach the dreaded Carcorith Orel, a chain of islands annexed from Anyëa by the demon horde and from where Tabitha can enter their homeworld. But, she is not alone on her journey. With her is Roshuna, her immortal firefox companion; Hallow, a reviled soulfire wraith; and Uwaithe, a demoness, all travelling in each other's uneasy company towards the great city port of Pherogol, and from there to sail to the black, cursed isles. Only, there is something wrong in Pherogol. An ancient evil stirs just beneath the port's prosperous façade. And when Tabitha's path crosses that of a Carcorithian child refugee fleeing the city with a mysterious artefact, a chain of events are set in motion that threaten to unleash an unimaginable horror into the world, the like of which has not been seen in Anyëa since the dawn of time. One that Roshuna should not have forgotten about...
It seemed like such a small difference. So harmless. . . Tabitha Moon possesses an astonishing, though inhuman, feature that sets her far apart from everyone else. Yet, whilst truly remarkable to look upon, she feels that her appearance is also the wellspring of her loneliness; a burden that only ever seems to attract stares, cruel words, intimidation and even harm... So Tabitha hides and dreams of release from her torment, completely unaware that she has an ancient ancestry founded far from the unhappy place she grudgingly calls "home." Nor is she aware that the mysterious lineage is not only responsible for how she looks but also for an incredibly powerful gift she has unknowingly inherited from them. Then, one night, without warning, everything changes... Ignited by a particularly violent and cowardly attack upon her, Tabitha's latent, arcane power erupts into life from deep within - and with it a bizarre, yet wondrous, entity also awakens...
"Affective Health and Masculinities in South Africa explores how different masculinities modulate substance use, interpersonal violence, suicidality, and AIDS as well as recovery cross-culturally. With a focus on three male protagonists living in very distinct urban areas of Cape Town, this comparative ethnography shows that men's struggles to become invulnerable increase vulnerability. Through an analysis of masculinities as social assemblages, the study shows how affective health problems are tied to modern individualism rather than African 'tradition' that has become a clichâe in Eurocentric gender studies. Affective health is conceptualized as a balancing act between autonomy and connectivity that after colonialism and apartheid has become compromised through the imperative of self-reliance. This book provides a rare perspective on young men's vulnerability in everyday life that may affect the reader and spark discussion about how masculinities in relationships shape physical and psychological health. Moreover, it shows how men change in the face of distress in ways that may look different than global health and gender transformative approaches envision. Thick descriptions of actual events over the life course make the study accessible to both graduate and undergraduate students in the social sciences. Contributing to current debates on mental health and masculinity, the volume will be of interest to scholars from a number of disciplines including anthropology, gender studies, African studies, psychology and global health"--
