The Second Edition of Contrastes: grammaire du français courant remains what it originally set out to be: a comprehensive French grammar review geared specifically to English-speaking students from the intermediate to the advanced levels. Written in French (with occasional footnotes and explanations in English), it is meant for those who have already acquired a foundation in French through contextual or communicative approaches, but who need to review and expand upon what they already know. Contrastes can be used as either a basic text or a grammar reference, and is designed specifically for instructors who prefer to use a straight-forward grammar textbook in tandem with their own choice of cultural or literary materials.
En bons termes is a first-year French program that aims to develop a basic proficiency in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) while fostering an awareness of the French presence in North America. It is designed to encourage and enable students to communicate in French not as a “foreign” language but as an alternative mode of expression. The ninth edition features nine new and current readings, updated vocabulary throughout the text to reflect modern word usage, and the new Les reformes orthographe appendix. This volume on digital literacies aims to provide CALL/SLA scholars and foreign language teachers with a focused set of studies that reflect current thinking on digital literacies from multiple perspectives and to offer recommendations for best practices in the classroom. Much more than a set of skills or competencies, digital literacies are conceptualized as a way of being an engaged, responsible reflective citizen in a 21st century global community permeated by multimodal technologies. It is therefore critical that digital literacies be integrated throughout foreign/second language education, where multiple communities, identities, languages, and cultures converge.
The purpose of this volume is to expand and refine our understanding of the use of design-based research (DBR) in CALL by contributing to the growing body of literature in this area. We have tried to strike a balance between theoretical considerations and concrete examples of DBR.The first section of this volume focuses on theoretical perspectives and ideas that can inform the use of DBR in CALL. The second section contains studies that illustrate DBR through concrete instances of its operationalization.
This volume offers an introduction to some Web 2.0 technologies. The primary goal of the volume is to establish where we are in terms of Web 2.0 tools for teaching and research, especially in language education. While the volume introduces many Web 2.0 tools and explores how these tools can be used in a classroom, it also offers reader an array of options in how to carry out SLA research using those tools.
