The 6th ESPRIT Conference is being held in Brussels from the 27th November to the 1 st December 1989. Well over 1500 participants from all over Europe are expected to attend the various events during the week. The Conference will offer the opportunity to be updated on the results of ongoing Esprit projects and to develop Europe-wide contacts with colleagues, both within a specific branch of Information Technology and across different branches. The first three days of the week are devoted to presentations of Esprit I projects, structured into plenary and parallel sessions; this year there is special emphasis on panels and workshops where participants can exchange ideas and hold in-depth discussions on specific topics. The different areas of Esprit work are covered: Microelectronics, Informa tion Processing Systems, Office and Business Systems, Computer Integrated Manufac turing, Basic Research and different aspects of the Information Exchange System. During the IT Forum on Thursday 30th November, major European industrial and political decision-makers will address the audience in the morning. In the afternoon, different aspects of Technology Transfer will be discussed with the participation of outside experts, and presentations on the future plans for community R&D in IT will take place.

"TAPSOFT '91 is the Fourth International Joint Conference on Theory and Practice of Software Development. It was held in Brighton, April 8-12, 1991, and was organized by the Department of Computing, Imperial College, London. The proceedings of TAPSOFT '91 are organized into three parts: - Advances in Distributed Computing (ADC) - Colloquium on Trees in Algebra and Programming (CAAP) - Colloquium on Combining Paradigms for Software Development (CCPSD) The proceedings are published in two volumes. The first volume (LNCS, Vol. 493) contains the papers from CAAP. The second volume (LNCS, Vol. 494) contains the papers from the ADC and CCPSD. The ADC talks by distinguished invited speakers surveys current developments in distributed computing, including the integration of different paradigms for concurrency, algebraic, logical and operational foundations, and applications to software engineering and formal methods. This volume is a collection of papers on topics focused around concurrency, based on research work presented at the UK/Japan Workshop held at Wadham College, Oxford, September 25-27, 1989. The volume is organized into four parts: - Papers on theoretical aspects of concurrency which reflect strong research activities in the UK, including theories on CCS and temporal logic RDL. - Papers on object orientation and concurrent languages which reflect major research activities on concurrency in Japan. The languages presented include extensions of C, Prolog and Lisp as well as object-based concurrent languages. - Papers on parallel architectures and VLSI logic, including a rewrite rule machine, a graph rewriting machine, and a dataflow architecture. - An overview of the workshop including the abstracts of the talks and the list of participants. The appendix gives a brief report of the first UK/Japan Workshop in Computer Science, held at Sendai, Japan, July 6-9, 1987.
In subvolume 27C1 magnetic and related properties of binary lanthanide oxides have been compiled. This subvolume covers data obtained since 1980 and can therefore be regarded as supplement to volume III/12c. While in the previous volume the majority of magnetic data was obtained either from magnetometric measurements or from neutron diffraction, for the present data the main emphasis is devoted to 'related' properties without which, however, the understanding of classical magnetic properties is impossible. A second part 27C2 will deal with binary oxides of the actinide elements.
