Loveland built a railroad connecting Denver to the Clear Creek Mining District-the Colorado Central Railroad. Just mention Colorado to the avid rail fan and you have their interest; add the term 'narrow gauge' and you have their undivided attention. Why this special interest in the Centennial State's railroads which span 120 years? One reason is Colorado's geography -- relatively flat plains in the eastern third of the state, the rugged Rocky Mountains in the central and southwest areas. This volume concludes the history of the Colorado & Southern's narrow gauge line up Clear Creek Canyon to Silver Plume and Central City. Based on newspaper articles of the time and railroad officials' memos and reports, the book traces C&S operations from 1901 to 1927. Then the histories, protests, and regulatory proceedings regarding the abandonments of various segments of the line are considered: the Central City to Black Hawk Line (1917 to 1932); the Denver to Silver Plume Line (1920-1929); the Line West of Idaho Springs (1934-1939); and the Line from Golden to Idaho Springs and Black Hawk (1939-1941). Additional information is provided on the devastating washout in 1933 and on the careers of various C&S officials.
