Excerpt from High School Laboratory Manual of Physics IN making this Manual two main objects have been kept in view. First, the teaching of Physics by the Inductive Method, that is, the presenting of a logically arranged course of experimental work that shall coves the ground of Elementary Physics. Second, the providing of sufficient laboratory work to meet the entrance requirements of any college in the country. Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physics If the student has not already pursued the subject of Physics in a text-book, he is recommended to take a text in connection with the course here given, as references are continually made which assume that he is acquainted with the ordinary facts, terms, and laws of Physics. This work is, in fact, so nearly supplementary to Sharpless and Philips's Natural Philosophy, that a few subjects fully treated in the experiments of that book, are passed over here with simple reference to the fact. Excerpt from New Laboratory Manual of Physics Thls point of view concerning the function of experimental work in elementary physics is maintained throughout the Manual, particularly in the statement of the purpose of each experiment and in the questions asked in the discussions. Consistently with the View that the laboratory course is not a sufficient basis from which to evolve physics as a science, it is assumed in the discussion of experimental results that the pupil has at least carefully read his text-book on the subject of the experiment, and is therefore in _a position not only to state the conclusions which are supported by his work, but also to pass judgment on the quality of it by comparing his results with those known to be correct. Excerpt from Practical Physics, Vol. 1: A Laboratory Manual Fro Colleges and Technical Schools The authors believe that physical laboratory work should accompany lecture and recitation work in physics from the beginning of the study of this science in the college or technical school, and they believe that a laboratory manual should set forth a series of definite exercises. A general discussion of how to measure a thing is, in their opinion, not a satisfactory basis for the laboratory work of a student. This laboratory manual has been prepared with these ideas in mind. A group of students who are beginning a laboratory course on the basis of this manual should be required to study the intro-ductory chapter, and to solve the problems illustrating the calculation of probable error. The system which has been used with great satisfaction by the authors in the assignment of laboratory exercises is described on page 2. The authors believe that one of the most important aspects of laboratory work in physics is that it gives to the student a series of more or less distinctly theoretical problems based upon experimental data obtained by themselves, and in accordance with this idea, the authors believe that a student should be required to work up his laboratory reports outside of the laboratory as specified on page 3. This manual is issued in three small volumes. The first volume is devoted to Precise Measurements and to Experiments in Mechanics and Heat; the second volume is devoted to Elementary and Advanced Measurements in Electricity and Magnetism; and the third volume is devoted to Photometry and to Experiments in Light and Sound.
