Nin high-volatile bituminous Utah coals were carbonized singly and in blends with low- and medium-volatile bituminous coals. Of the 9 coals, 2 are in commercial use as the base coals in blends that produce industrially acceptable metallurgical coke, while 7 are regarded as weakly coking and are not used commercially in coking blends. The carbonization tests were made in a 10-inch diameter, cylindrical retort, using 50-pound charges.
