To continue the success that has marked Santa Monica's Downtown over the past several decades, the City should have a clear and realistic vision of what Downtown is and can become. The Downtown Community Plan (DCP) builds on the strengths and previous planning efforts geared at revitalizing the Third Street Promenade, preserving historic assets, stimuating art and cultural activity, incentivize housing and maintain the areas's character while allowing for its continued evolution. The DCP provides specific results-oriented actions to make Downtown more vibrant and accessible to a larger section of residents and visitors, and it promotes urban sustainability by accommodating future residential and employee populations within a pedestrian-friendly and transit-oriented district.
The Urban Land Institute has again cooperated with Visual Reference Publications to co-sponsor this third volume titled Urban Spaces No. 3, which showcases more than 140 outstanding urban/mixed use design projects by leading architects, landscape architects, urban designers and planners. This 320 page volume with over 500 beautifully reproduced full-colour images is an invaluable reference for urban planners, public officials, building committees, and professionals who are responsible for the planning, design, and construction of urban developments of all kinds.
This Pedestrian Action Plan recognizes and celebrates walking as a core part of the City’s identity and character, while laying out a specific vision, standards, priority projects, and programs to guide improvements to the walking environment over the next 15 years... The Pedestrian Action Plan continues the City’s longstanding effort to prioritize people walking in its planning and transportation decisions, promoting equity, and ensuring comfort for a wide range of users. This has included citywide planning efforts such as the 2010 Land Use and Circulation Element, as well as more focused, pedestrian-supportive plans, such as the Downtown Community Plan, Bergamot Area Plan, and public improvement projects... City Council has directed creation of “Vision Zero Santa Monica,” a goal to eliminate preventable severe injuries and fatalities of people using roadways in the City. The continued evolution of the City and major infrastructure investments such as the new Expo Light Rail line will increase the number of people walking here, and change walking routes.
