The fifth instalment in the 'Memoirs of a Houseboy' series I wasn't looking forward to spending Christmas as part of a house party at Leo's place to begin with. The booze ban by my boyfriends had taken the lustre right off the party season for me. What's Christmas without a flagon of ale or a classy glass of fancy fizz? Boring! A visit to my mother, on the day before Christmas Eve, did nothing to lift my mood. It triggered a welter of memories and emotions that made Christmas seem even less appealing. Stuff the season of goodwill. I just wanted to be left alone to brood. I wasn't given the choice. I was spending Christmas at Leo's, whether I liked it or not. It proved to be eventful in its own way. Details within. Gillibran Brown

Leo the Great was the beneficiary of the consolidation of the power of the papacy in Rome and the Christianization of the city over the course of the preceding century. In this carefully nuanced study Bernard Green demonstrates the influences at work on this celebrated pope's development as a theological thinker, including two of the most reknowned theological names of the period, Ambrose of Milan and Augustine of Hippo. Green charts Leo's theological journey from his first encounters with the Pelagian and Nestorian controversies, where he engaged Cassian as an advisor. Leo took an admiring though limited view of Cyril of Alexandria but misunderstood the weaknesses in Nestorius' thought. As pope, Leo preached a civic Christianity, accessible to all citizens, baptising the virtues of the classical and civic past. The study then examines Leo's recently dated sermons and reveals the evolution of his thought as he worked out a soteriology that gave full value to both the divinity and humanity of Christ, especially in reaction to Manichaeism. In the crisis that led to Chalcedon, Leo's earlier misunderstanding of Nestorius affected the content of his Tome, which was atypical of the Christology and soteriology he had developed in his earlier preaching. Green persuasively concludes that its emphasis on the distinction of the two natures was an uncharacteristic attempt to respond to both Eutyches and Nestorius, as this pope understood them. In the light of Chalcedon, Leo produced a revised statement of Christology, the Letter to the Palestinian monks, which is both more accomplished and better aligned with his characteristic thought.
A monumental work in scope and content, Aloys Grillmeier's Chirst in the Christian Tradition offers students and scholars a comprehensive exposition of Western writing on the history of doctrine. Volume Two, Part One, covers the development of Christology from the Council of Chalcedon to the beginning of the rule of Emperor Justinian I.

ASA agent William Wright had matured from being a brash young soldier to a seasoned espionage agent with a gift that foretold impending danger. He gradually changed from a baby-faced university student to a devilish handsome young man with an agenda in pursuing communist agents to beautiful ladies in Europe. These traits had a tendency to have him loved or hated according to who was taken advantage of his availability. The ones who disliked his natural confident manner were usually fathers protecting their daughters or husbands who became adversaries. He never turned downor almost nevera ladys wishes when they were needed to make sure an assignment was successful. Loyalty was his creed with fellow associates, lovers and the three generals he answered to, and justifiable force was his trademark. Will asked for no quarter and gave only when respect warranted such reactions.
