This book provides a general overview of several concepts of synchronization and brings together related approaches to secure communication in chaotic systems. This is achieved using a combination of analytic, algebraic, geometrical and asymptotical methods to tackle the dynamical feedback stabilization problem. In particular, differential-geometric and algebraic differential concepts reveal important structural properties of chaotic systems and serve as guide for the construction of design procedures for a wide variety of chaotic systems. The basic differential algebraic and geometric concepts are presented in the first few chapters in a novel way as design tools, together with selected experimental studies demonstrating their importance. The subsequent chapters treat recent applications. This pages include the results derived during last ten years about both suppression and synchronization of chaotic -continuous time- systems. Along this time, our concept was to study how the intrinsic properties of dynamical systems can be exploited to suppress and to synchronize the chaotic behavior and what synchronization phen- ena can be found under feedback interconnection. Our findings have caused surprise to us and have stimulated our astonishing capability. Perhaps, reader can imagine our faces with opens eyes like children seeing around objects; which are possibly obvious for others and novel for us. A compilation of our surprises about these findings is being described along this book. Book contains both objectives to share our ama- ment and to show our perspective on synchronization of chaotic systems. Thus, while we were writing the preface, we discussed its scope. Thinking as a book readers, we found that a preface should answer, in few words, the following question: What can the reader find in this book?, reader can find our steps toward understanding of c- otic behavior and the possibility of suppressing and synchronizing it. We firstly show the chaos suppression form experimental domain to potential implementation in high tech system as a levitation system based on High Temperature Superconductors (HTS). Controlling Chaos achieves three goals: the suppression, synchronisation and generation of chaos, each of which is the focus of a separate part of the book. Modern technological, biological, and socioeconomic systems are extremely complex. The study of such systems largely relies on the concepts of competition and cooperation (synchronization). The main approaches to the study of nonlinear dynamics of complex systems are now associated with models of collective dynamics of networks and ensembles, formed by interacting dynamical elements.Unfortunately, the applicability of analytical and qualitative methods of nonlinear dynamics to such complex systems is severely restricted due to the high dimension of phase space. Therefore, studying the simplest models of networks, which are ensembles with a small number of elements, becomes of particular interest. Such models allow to make use of the entire spectrum of analytical, qualitative, and numerical methods of nonlinear dynamics. This book is devoted to the investigation of a kind of such systems, namely small ensembles of coupled, phase-controlled oscillators. Both traditional issues, like synchronization, that are relevant for applications in radio-communications, radio-location, energy, etc., and nontraditional issues of excitation of chaotic oscillations and their possible application in advanced communication systems are addressed.
