"The old order changeth, yielding place to new. " When Tennyson wrote this, he was unfamiliar with the pace of modem science else he would have said the new is displaced by the newer. When Gilbert and I gathered the papers for the first edition of this overview of metamorphosis, we aimed to provide a broad basis upon which the experimental analysis of the developmental changes called metamorphosis could proceed. We were both aware then that with the new techniques of biochemistry and with the revolutionary breakthrough to the nature of the gene, countless new possibilities were being opened for the exploration of the molecular basis of development. The resources offered by metamorphic changes offered unique opportunities to trace the path from gene to phenotype. Our expectations were high. I visited Larry Gilbert and Earl Frieden in their laboratories and saw with envy how far advanced they were then in the use of molecular methods of analysis. I had started on a different approach to develop an in vitro test for thyroid action on amphibian tissue. But circumstances limited my own progress to the initial delim itation of the technical possibilities of the in vitro system. Only from the sidelines could I watch the steady if slow progress of biology in penetrating the maze of molecular events by which animal tissues re spond to hormonal and other developmental factors.

Pathobiology of Cell Membranes, Volume II, is the second in a multivolume treatise on pathobiological aspects of cell membranes that aims to give the reader an overview of developments concerning the role of altered cell membranes in various pathological processes. This volume includes not only information on pathobiological aspects of cell membranes as studied at the molecular and subcellular level but also important new advances in the role of membranes in human diseases such as multiple sclerosis, shock lung, muscle dystrophies, and hematological disorders. The book begins by discussing a very important and yet poorly known aspect of cellular metabolism; namely, the compartmentalization of intracellular cations such as sodium, calcium, and magnesium. This is followed by separate chapters on fundamentals of membrane conformational changes in the erythrocyte model; the structure and function of peroxisomes and their role in disease processes; the use of invertebrate models for studies of pathological reactions; and reactions of lysosomes to cellular injury. Subsequent chapters deal with the pathology of skeletal muscle membranes; the shock lung syndrome; cellular mechanisms involved in jaundice and cholestasis; and pathology of the endothelium.
Insects as a group occupy a middle ground in the biosphere between bac teria and viruses at one extreme, amphibians and mammals at the other. The size and general nature of insects present special problems to the student of entomology. For example, many commercially available in struments are geared to measure in grams, while the forces commonly en countered in studying insects are in the milligram range. Therefore, tech niques developed in the study of insects or in those fields concerned with the control of insect pests are often unique. Methods for measuring things are common to all sciences. Advances sometimes depend more on how something was done than on what was measured; indeed a given field often progresses from one technique to another as new methods are discovered, developed, and modified. Just as often, some of these techniques find their way into the classroom when the problems involved have been sufficiently ironed out to permit students to master the manipulations in a few laboratory periods. Many specialized techniques are confined to one specific research labo ratory. Although methods may be considered commonplace where they are used, in another context even the simplest procedures may save con siderable time. It is the purpose of this series (1) to report new develop ments in methodology, (2) to reveal sources of groups who have dealt with and solved particular entomological problems, and (3) to describe ex periments which might be applicable for use in biology laboratory courses.
