This work examines the interplay between the city of Sacramento and the Catholic Church since the 1850s. Avella uses Sacramento as a case study of the role of religious denominations in the development of the American West. In Sacramento, as in other western urban areas, churches brought civility and various cultural amenities, and they helped to create an atmosphere of stability so important to creating a viable urban community. At the same time, churches often had to shape themselves to the secularizing tendencies of western cities while trying to remain faithful to their core values and practices. Besides the numerous institutions that the Church sponsored, it brought together a wide spectrum of the city’s diverse ethnic populations and offered them several routes to assimilation. Catholic Sacramentans have always played an active role in government and in the city’s economy, and Catholic institutions provided a matrix for the creation of new communities as the city spread into neighboring suburbs. At the same time, the Church was forced to adapt itself to the needs and demands of its various ethnic constituents, particularly the flood of Spanish-speaking newcomers in the late twentieth century.
Mother with Child This book is written for all Parents expecting their miraculous Gift from God. Each little one is a uniquely precious inspiration of Gods love that has taken form in flesh - with a soul perfectly formed by God. That soul is the mark of the Creator and our connection to the Blessed Trinity. Your Baby is not just a Gift to hold and nurture; this little one is - and holds - the spark of God within. This child has a soul that will live forever an eternal connection to God! The goal of this book is to inspire Parents to grow in faith, hope, and love as they await the birth of their child. Through Holy Scripture, God builds us up in what we need. All parents need to be encouraged, strengthened, and equipped so as to impart these treasures of truth and wisdom to their children. Then each generation will grow deeper in faith, character, and in Gods virtues. The intent and design of the book is to reach two audiences: To encourage those that recognize the Gift of Life that they have been given, to grow deeper in Gods wisdom so as to impart His knowledge to the next generation. In addition, this book was equally written for those that may feel lost, where life seems to just be a whirl of confusion and despair. Hope still pervades, and God always inspires us to seek His Truth. Both situations must be addressed, since the same Lord made all of us and He loves each one of us. God always has the perfect solution to repair and to build us UP. Do all in love, I Corinthians 16:14. This unique and inspirational book provides Scriptural encouragement to mothers during their nine months of pregnancy. At a time when a woman really needs encouragement, the Mother with Child book provides unparalleled support. This perfect gift for an expectant mother cannot be highly recommended enough. Fundamental to the rapid growth of the Church in America are these exceptionally inspired men and women, not yet canonized, who lived heroic virtue and thereby changed the face of our country. Author Michael O'Neill unveils twenty-four of America's greatest "blesseds" and "venerables," whose causes for canonization are already underway. You'll meet young Europeans who gave up secure lives for the wilderness of America - knowing they would never see their families again. You'll meet the husband and wife who, despite being slaves, showed remarkable charity to their so-called owners. You'll explore the miraculously productive life of Knights of Columbus founder Fr. Michael McGivney, who died at the age of thirty-eight, as well as the twenty-three-year-old explorer priest who covered two hundred thousand square miles, heard confessions for up to fourteen hours at a stretch, ate prairie rats when necessary - and founded thirty parishes. You'll also enjoy the remarkable stories of: Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, America's first TV evangelist, Pierre Toussaint, once a slave, then an entrepreneur devoted to the poor, Henriette DeLille, the remarkable "Saint of New Orleans", Fr. Augustus Tolton, the nation's first black priest, himself a former slave, Cornelia Connelly, whose children were stolen from her because of her conversion, Fr. Patrick Peyton, "the Rosary Priest," of Hollywood Book jacket.
As the number of available priests has declined, the Sunday Mass is becoming less and less available in some parishes and dioceses. Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest addresses this growing reality by providing the appropriate ritual to be used in the celebrating community. This revised ritual edition of Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest is fully bilingual, with Spanish and English printed side by side. It includes Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, and two appendices, Directory for Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest and Gathered in Steadfast Faith. This beautifully bound ritual book includes three ribbons and is printed in two colors. It will be a welcome addition to the sacristy or library of every parish, school, convent, and religious house.
In this volume in the Liturgy Documentary Series, the bishops reaffirm the distribution of the Holy Communion to the faithful under both kinds.
