Robert Seldon Rose was born in Henrico County, Virginia on February 24, 1774. and married Jane Lawson in 1796. The family moved to Seneca County, New York in 1803 and settled on a farm near Geneva. Descendants lived principally in Geneva, New York and surrounding areas of Wayne, Seneca, and Yates counties.

Genealogies, as far as they could be found have been examined in the libraries of the New England Genealogical and Historical Society in Boston, and of the Long Island Historical Society in Brooklyn, and in the Lenox Library in New York.
