Cadence is a comprehensive examination of how formal units in European art music of the tonal era achieve closure. The book brings together the author's decades-long investigations into cadence, a compositional device that is readily experienced both by musicians and non-musicians, but one that has proven intractable to clear and precise theoretical formulation. Rooted in Caplin's broader theory of formal functions, the book first develops concepts of cadence for music of the high classical style and then extends these ideas to gauge cadential practice in earlier and later style periods. Throughout the study, various manifestations of cadence are defined in terms of their morphology (their harmonic and melodic profiles) as well as their function (the specific formal contexts in which they are deployed). Cadence introduces a host of theoretical concepts illustrated by copious musical examples, all of which contain extensive analytical annotations of harmony, melody and form. Though the book is addressed primarily to music theorists, the many issues of compositional practice raised in this study will resonate with the interests of composers, historians, and performers alike.
Cadence explores the many ways in which the component parts of a classical composition achieve a sense of ending. The book examines cadential practice in a wide variety of musical styles in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including works by well-known composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, and Brahms.
Caden Winters and his best friends have just finished high school and no one is more thrilled than him to start college at the most prestigious university, Gladore, on the planet of Alloterra. To make up for ditching Caden early during the farewell, Elizabeth Bell agrees to spend an evening in the dangerous Loness Jungle with Caden, hunting monsters. During this event, Caden battles a terrifying dragon and lives to tell the tale. When Caden receives the Necklace of Ziar from his parents, he tells them all about his daring adventure with Elizabeth. Caden’s mother freaks out and makes Caden promise that he won’t go out looking for danger like that. Even though Caden agrees with his mother and wants nothing more than to excel at his studies in Gladore, it seems destiny has different plans for him…
A festschrift prepared for the occasion of musicologist Lewis Lockwood's 65th birthday. The volume's 27 contributions, written by Lockwood's students and American colleagues, cover topics including tonal color in Dufay; notes on a Josquin motet and its sources; the Florentine madrigal, 1540-60; and a model for a changing aesthetic in the chansons of Loyset Compere. An appendix lists Lockwood's publications on Renaissance music.
Building on ideas first advanced by Arnold Schoenberg and later developed by Erwin Ratz, this book introduces a new theory of form for instrumental music in the classical style. The theory provides a broad set of principles and a comprehensive methodology for the analysis of classical form, from individual ideas, phrases, and themes to the large-scale organization of complete movements. It emphasizes the notion of formal function, that is, the specific role a given formal unit plays in the structural organization of a classical work.
Sixth-century Scotland—in the time of Arthur…. “The Gowrys’ seed shall divide your mighty house and bring a peace beyond the ken of your wicked soul.” Her mother’s dying prophecy to the chieftain Tarlach O’Byrne sentenced Brenna of Gowrys to twenty years of hiding. Twenty years of being hunted—by the O’Byrnes, who fear the prophecy, and by her kinsmen, who expect her to lead them against their oppressors. But Brenna is a trained and gifted healer, not a warrior queen. So she lives alone in the wilderness with only her pet wolf for company. When she rescues a man badly wounded from an ambush, she believes he may be the answer to her deep loneliness. Healing him comes as easy as loving him. But can their love overcome years of bitterness and greed…and bring peace and renewed faith to the shattered kingdom?
