A story staring a teenage William Cody. He is given the job of guiding a wagon train to Leavenworth, which is transporting a large amount of silver, and while some members are initally a little wary of such a young person leading them, as well as his inclusion increasing the count of the group to a unlucky thirteen. When almost at their destination the main wagon breaks down, so they are forced to cache the majority of the silver; the next morning one of the miners has passed away, and he is buried. While initially not thinking much of it, months after the journey more and more men from the group die, and while Billy is puzzling over this, he is also distracted by thoughts ofKent King: a man who onced went after young Cody's sister, and then his first love.
