In 1966, a bacteriological survey of the western shoreline of Campobello Island, New Brunswick, led to a closure of the water on Deep Cove. Between May 5 and June 2, 1976, a bacteriological and a physical sanitary investigation was conducted of the shellfish area of Deep Cove to reassess the closure. A total of 343 water samples were collected from the surrounding areas, and were tested for the presence of fecal coliform bacteria.
