This book concerns the interpretation of mammograms. It contains 55 case-studies, each of which includes a full-size mammogram reproduction, a discussion of the case, additional mammograms and a histological correlation.
Featuring over 1,500 mammographic images, this atlas is a comprehensive guide to interpreting mammograms. It presents the full spectrum of manifestations of breast diseases, as well as cases involving the postsurgical and augmented breast. Chapters are organized according to the pattern seen on the mammogram to develop readers' pattern recognition skills and to allow quick and complete definition of etiologies and clinical implications for a particular finding. This edition includes new chapters on the augmented breast, the role of ultrasound and MRI in breast imaging, and imaging-guided breast interventions. The terminology of the BI-RADS® lexicon is used throughout.
Following an introductory chapter, this atlas provides opportunity for readers to test their skill in interpreting the mammograms of a wide variety of pathologically proven cases. The cases were selected on the basis of their diversity of mammographic manifestations, with emphasis on the often subtle features of carcinoma. Each case begins with a short history, followed by mammograms for self testing. The test mammograms have been reproduced to full size and are free of arrows or other indicators of abnormalities. They are bounded by coordinate grids for location of abnormalities described in the findings and discussion sections. Important topics in the mammography literature are summarized. Meschan Distinguished Professor of Radiology, Wake Forest University Medical Center, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA Amongst the present generation of radiologists, beguiled by the glamour and excitement of the new high tech imaging and interventional modalities, too few have developed a strong sense of differential diagnosis based on radiologic pattern recognition and its correlation with clinical and laboratory fmdings. There is no question about the incredible contribution by the new modalities to our diagnostic armamentarium, but in the evolution of mod em-day radiologic practice, the cognitive element has been neglected and our abilities as diagnosticians have suffered. The advent of this third edition of Reeder and Felson's Gamuts in Radiology is timely and welcome. As always, use of the gamut lists will help evoke differential thinking, and this has been enhanced by the addition of over 250 new gamuts as well as by the updating of over three-fourths of the existing gamuts.
