"The primary purpose of this study was to focus on the land use/water quality link and how it is influenced by market demands and local land use planning and regulatory systems. This study reviews historical practices that have influenced land use planning in Michigan; existing demographic, economic, transportation and environmental trends which continue to impact land use demands; and, [sic] how these trends affect both surface and groundwater quality. Key biological concepts and issues are also reviewed to provide a frame of reference for a discussion of local land use planning and land use controls ... Following the initial presentation of introductory and trend analysis information, a brief overview of applicable state and federal water quality and land use legislation as well as regulatory programs are outlined."--Preface
