Excerpt from Annual Report of the Receipts, Expenditures, Reports of Departments, Etc: For the Municipal Year 1877 Through the continued mercy of an all-wise God, in whom we put our trust, and in conformity with the require ments of the Laws of our State. And by the expressed wish es of our fellow-citizens, we have to-day undertaken the re sponsibility of managing the municipal affairs of our city for the ensuing year. One year ago I entered upon the new and untried duties of my office as Mayor, with a fervent de sire and a strong determination to watch and guard the city's interests, and to promote, in however so small a meas ure, its welfare and prosperity. Commencing the present year untrammeled by any subjects of contention or entailed bills of expense, we may confidently expect such prudence and wisdom that our indebtedness will diminish the present year. To those who have had the experience of the past year, I need not speak of the importance of the trust com mitted to their hands. To those who for the first time oc cupy places in our municipal government, I will simply say, the duties of your offices will draw largely upon your time and patience; but, in accepting these responsibilities, we have bound ourselves by the solemnity of an oath, to devote our time and energies to the faithful performance of the work severally assigned to us.
