This study was prepared for the Combat Identification/Electronic Warfare Division, Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey, under the direction of the Army Combat Identification Systems Program Office. Its purpose is to review the impact the implementation of the Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System (ATCRBS) Mode S will have on Army combat operations. As part of the National Airspace Plan, the Federal Aviation Administration will update all major components of the existing air traffic control system. One of the new major system components of the ATC system is the Mode S Beacon Interrogator System, a combined secondary surveillance radar and ground-air-ground data link system which will be capable of providing the aircraft surveillance and communications necessary to support air traffic control automation in the dense traffic environment expected in the future.
