This review of literature examines empirical literature regarding nurses' job satisfaction in relation to long work hours and correlated factors such as nurse resilience. The widespread nursing shortage and high nurse turnover are of great concern in many countries and has become a global issue impacting the effectiveness of healthcare systems (Lu, While, & Louise Barriball, 2005). While many factors have been linked to nurses' turnover, job satisfaction is the most frequently cited (Lu et al., 2005). To guide this literature review, the following question was formulated to address the issue of nurse job satisfaction: Do nurses who have longer work hours, such as 12-hour shifts, experience decreased job satisfaction? A review of literature was conducted using CINAHL, ProQuest Nursing, & Google Scholar databases to identify and examine prior research on long work hours such as 12-hour shifts contributing to decreased job satisfaction among nurses. The findings from this literature review suggest that longer hours contribute to decreased job satisfaction among nurses, and facilitating an eight-hour workday can improve job satisfaction - Abstract.
