Winner of the 2019 Menno Hertzberger Encouragement Prize for Book History and Bibliography In Dutch and Flemish Newspapers of the Seventeenth Century Arthur der Weduwen presents the first comprehensive account of the early newspaper in the Low Countries. Composed of two volumes, this survey provides detailed introductions and bibliographical descriptions of 49 newspapers, surviving in over 16,000 issues in 84 archives and libraries. This work presents a crucial overview of the first fledgling century of newspaper publishing and reading in one of the most advanced political cultures of early modern Europe. Seventy years after Folke Dahl’s Dutch Corantos first documented early Dutch newspapers, Der Weduwen offers a brand-new approach to the bibliography of the early modern periodical press. This includes, amongst others, a description of places of correspondence listed in each surviving newspaper. The bibliography is accompanied by an extensive introduction of the Dutch and Flemish press in the seventeenth century. What emerges is a picture of a highly competitive and dynamic market for news, in which innovative publishers constantly adapt to the changing tastes of customers and pressures from authorities at home and abroad.
Geotourism, as a form of sustainable geoheritage tourism, was defined and developed, from the early 1990s, to contextualize modern approaches to geoconservation and physical landscape management. However, its roots lie in the late seventeenth century and the emergence of the Grand Tour and its domestic equivalents in the eighteenth century. Its participants and numerous later travellers and tourists, including geologists and artists, purposefully explored wild landscapes as‘geotourists’. The written and visual records of their observations underpin the majority of papers within this volume; these papers explore some significant geo-historical themes, organizations, individuals and locations across three centuries, opening with seventeenth century elite travellers and closing with modern landscape tourists. Other papers examine the resources available to those geotourists and explore the geotourism paradigm. The volume will be of particular interest to Earth scientists, historians of science, tourism specialists and general readers with an interest in landscape history.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th Conference on Digital Encounters with Cultural Heritage, DECH 2017, and the First Workshop on Research and Education in Urban History in the Age of Digital Libraries, UHDL 2017, held in Dresden, Germany, in March 2017. The 11 revised full papers from DECH 2017 and two revised full papers from UHDL 2017 presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 33 joint submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on research on architectural and urban cultural heritage; technical access; systematization; education in urban history; organizational perspectives.
The fourth volume on Dutch silver deals with those embossed ecclesiastical and secular objects which are not described in Volume I. Since that volume is confined to plaquettes, tazze and dishes, together with the complete oeuvre of the three most famous artists Adam and Paul van Vianen, and Lutma, a large variety of objects remains to be dealt with. Amongst these are many very important and beautiful vessels. The principal pieces described in this volume are of ecclesiastical origin such as monstrances, ciboriums, chalices, pyxes, chrismatories, mass-cruets, incense-boats and burners, altar-thrones, lecterns, missal covers, canon-board frames, altar -bells, altar-vases, altar -candlesticks, sanctuary lamps and sconces. Further, secular silver such as plaquettes, tazze and dishes, that have come to our knowledge since the publication of the first volume, and also plaquette medals, boxes, book-covers, beakers, tankards, cups, bowls, basins, bottles, plate used for the toilet, for the table, candlesticks and plate used for the service of tea, coffee and chocolate. A general survey of a number of objects is given in the Introductions to the first and second volumes (Volume I, p. VI; Volume II, p. VI~XIV). Certain additional observations concerning the nature, technique of manufacture and decoration of the particular types of article illustrated in this volume are, however, necessary.
