Aloisia Schmidt is an ordinary secretary with a burning question: am I a redundant human being? She's neither pretty nor ugly (though she wishes she were hideous: at least that would be something), has no imagination, and is forced to live vicariously through "borrowed" fantasy--fantasy, that is, borrowed from books, plays, even other people's lives. She loves to hate herself, and loves for other people to hate her too. In one final, guilt-ridden, masturbatory, self-obsessed confession, Aloisia indulges her masochistic tendencies to the fullest, putting her entire life on trial, and trying, through telling her story (a story, she assures us, that's "so laughably mundane" it's really no story at all), to transform an ordinary life into something extraordinary.
Managing Low Self Esteem charts Windy Dryden's work in running brief, structured, educationally-orientated, self-acceptance groups. The book is based on the principles of Rational Emotive Behaviour - an approach to counselling and psychotherapy. This approach has a philosophical position in the self which stresses a person's uniqueness, humanity, complexity and fallibility. In this way, it advocates self-acceptance rather than self-esteem. It also argues that this position can be taught and learned in a short peiod of time. Through detailed session reviews, the book shows how unconditional self-acceptance can be taught not only to psychotherapy clients, but to members of the general public.
Marx the Humanist presents Marx’s writings in a different light. Instead of malicious demagnification, which makes him responsible for everything done in his name after his death, it is recognised that he was not a prophet and could not have foreseen the changes that have occurred since then. His early writings reflect his humanism, and represent his long-term revolutionary appeal. Although the focus is on Marx’s humanism, the first two parts initiate the reader and provide an introduction to basic Marxist ideas, both philosophical and economic. This provides the context for his condemnation of the dehumanising impact of capitalism on workers through exploitation.

One of the world's leading practitioners, thinkers and teachers in the field of psychotherapy and counselling here presents an account of how to run brief, structured, educationally oriented groups which aim to develop self-acceptance as a step in helping clients who have emotional problems. Windy Dryden illustrates the process and practicalities of running self-acceptance groups with a detailed session-by-session review of his own practice with one group, using the Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy approach with which he is so much associated. This book offers to students and practitioners of therapy and counselling * An introduction to the principles of REBT and some valuable developments of the approach which will interest even experienced followers of REBT * A powerful process for building self-acceptance, rather than self-esteem, in a way which stresses a person's uniqueness, humanity, complexity and fallibility * Clear, practical guidance on how therapists and counsellors can use and present these principles and processes within structured, educational groups "Windy Dryden has done it again ... he has taken one of the key theories of REBT, added to it considerably, and shown in detail how it can be successfully implemented by teachers, and by therapists with their clients ... (he) has done a great service to emotional education by providing us with this sound and practical manual." From the Foreword by Albert Ellis, President, Albert Ellis Institute for REBT, New York This book appears in the Wiley Series in Brief Therapy and Counselling Series Editor: Windy Dryden Goldsmiths College, University of London, UK
The field of Jungian psychology has been growing steadily over the last twenty years and awareness is increasing of its relevance to the predicaments of modern life. Jung appeals not only to professionals who are looking for a more humane and creative way of working with their clients, but also to academics in an increasingly wide range of disciplines. This Handbook is unique in presenting a clear, comprehensive and systematic exposition of the central tenets of Jung’s work which has something to offer to both specialists and those seeking an introduction to the subject. Internationally recognised experts in Jungian Psychology cover the central themes in three sections: Theory, Psychotherapy & Applications. Each chapter begins with an introduction locating the topic in the context of Jung’s work as a whole, before moving on to an investigation of contemporary developments and concluding by demonstrating how Jung’s theories continue to evolve and develop through their practical therapeutic applications. The Handbook of Jungian Psychology is the definitive source of authoritative information on Jungian psychology for Jungian analysts, psychotherapists, counsellors and related professionals. It will be an invaluable aid to those involved in Jungian academic studies and related disciplines.
This book offers an introductory review to a wide range of thinking, formulated over the last half-millennium in the Western world, about the meaning of human existence. It will touch on a variety of issues of contemporary significance, such as the origin and uniqueness of the human species, freedom and determinism, the nature of good and evil, and the possibilities and limits of the sciences. The book will supply a number of explanatory comments, from a Christian perspective, on the various views uncovered. Insofar as human beings are fascinated by exploring the reality of their own selves, in relation to history, culture, the natural environment, and a variety of worldviews, this book will afford readers plenty of material to stimulate them in their own exploration.
A collection of essays by the celebrated philosopher Elizabeth Anscombe. This collection includes papers on human nature and practical philosophy, together with the classic 'Modern Moral Philosophy'
Redundancy, restructuring, downsizing. There are few, if any, other management books on this important topic, and yet the pace of redundancies has only accelerated in recent years. Coupled with this, many companies that implement redundancies as a cost-cutting exercise often fail to achieve their goal. Whilst viewed as an uncomfortable topic by many, guidance on how to implement a redundancy programme that is fair, proportionate and ultimately leads to improved organisational performance, has never been more needed. This book fills this important gap. It takes the reader through a redundancy implementation strategy – Re-Focus, Re-Organise and Re-Build – that incorporates the key aspects of planning and analysis, fairness and justice, and prepares management for redundancy implementation through training. What will your communications include? What will be your strategy for implementation? What training does your management need? Various helpful template examples are included for employee consultation, communication and training. The book will be invaluable for business managers, HR professionals, employee representatives and HR students.
