Lewis Carroll's prominent example of the genre of "literary nonsense" has endured in popularity with its clever way of playing with logic and a narrative structure that has influence generations of fiction writing.
This thesis is a comparative analysis of wordplay in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and two of its Japanese translations - 1927 Arisu Monogatari by Akutagawa Ry%nosuke and Kikuchi Kan, and 2010 Fushigi no Kuni no Arisu by Kawai Sh%ichir%. The main objective is to present and discuss the wordplay - puns and malapropisms specifically - and its translations from the three texts mentioned above. The thesis also presents background information on the author and the three translators, as well as the circumstances and information on the three books discussed herein. The thesis proposes seven translation techniques based on models by Zhang (2017) and Ambrosiani (2010), who observed Delabastita's older, widely-accepted model. The older of the two translations proves to be more literal, with a penchant for omission, while the newer translation prefers the technique of substitution, occasionally accompanied by addition. Fushigi no Kuni no Arisu is, as opposed to Arisu Monogatari, a refreshing text to read, especially knowing the original text and the amount of work that must have gone into choosing how to transfer the wordplay to achieve such an effect in a language so different from English.
