This book is a revised version of the first edition and is intended as a Linear Algebra sequel and companion volume to the fourth edition of (Graduate Texts in Mathematics 23). As before, the terminology and basic results of Linear Algebra are frequently used without refer~nce. In particular, the reader should be familiar with Chapters 1-5 and the first part of Chapter 6 of that book, although other sections are occasionally used. In this new version of Multilinear Algebra, Chapters 1-5 remain essen tially unchanged from the previous edition. Chapter 6 has been completely rewritten and split into three (Chapters 6, 7, and 8). Some of the proofs have been simplified and a substantial amount of new material has been added. This applies particularly to the study of characteristic coefficients and the Pfaffian. The old Chapter 7 remains as it stood, except that it is now Chapter 9. The old Chapter 8 has been suppressed and the material which it con tained (multilinear functions) has been relocated at the end of Chapters 3, 5, and 9. The last two chapters on Clifford algebras and their representations are completely new. In view of the growing importance of Clifford algebras and the relatively few references available, it was felt that these chapters would be useful to both mathematicians and physicists.

The Clifford algebras of real quadratic forms and their complexifications are studied here in detail, and those parts which are immediately relevant to theoretical physics are seen in the proper broad context. Central to the work is the classification of the conjugation and reversion anti-involutions that arise naturally in the theory. It is of interest that all the classical groups play essential roles in this classification. Other features include detailed sections on conformal groups, the eight-dimensional non-associative Cayley algebra, its automorphism group, the exceptional Lie group G(subscript 2), and the triality automorphism of Spin 8. This book introduces a new class of non-associative algebras related to certain exceptional algebraic groups and their associated buildings. Richard Weiss develops a theory of these "quadrangular algebras" that opens the first purely algebraic approach to the exceptional Moufang quadrangles. These quadrangles include both those that arise as the spherical buildings associated to groups of type E6, E7, and E8 as well as the exotic quadrangles "of type F4" discovered earlier by Weiss. Based on their relationship to exceptional algebraic groups, quadrangular algebras belong in a series together with alternative and Jordan division algebras. Formally, the notion of a quadrangular algebra is derived from the notion of a pseudo-quadratic space (introduced by Jacques Tits in the study of classical groups) over a quaternion division ring. This book contains the complete classification of quadrangular algebras starting from first principles. It also shows how this classification can be made to yield the classification of exceptional Moufang quadrangles as a consequence. The book closes with a chapter on isotopes and the structure group of a quadrangular algebra. Quadrangular Algebras is intended for graduate students of mathematics as well as specialists in buildings, exceptional algebraic groups, and related algebraic structures including Jordan algebras and the algebraic theory of quadratic forms.
