Ancestry is traced to Thomas Carter, born 1610 of Hinderclay, Suffolk, England. He came to Massachusetts in 1635 and settled in Dedham and later Woburn. He married Mary Parkhurst. Their descendant, James Bruce Cartter (1815-1897), son of David Kellog Cartter and Elizabeth Hollister, was born in Rochester, New York. He later settled in Wisconsin in 1843 and married Isadora Swift in 1855. Family members and descendants lived in Wisconsin, Arizona, Kansas, Oregon, and elsewhere.
