Excerpt from A Manual of Bee-Keeping In my position as Honorary Secretary of the British Beekeepers' Association, I was frequently asked to recommend a moderately priced book, which would instruct the inquirer how properly to manage his Bees; to my great regret I was unable to give a satisfactory reply, being acquainted with no work embracing the requisites of cheapness and completeness up to our then standard of knowledge, to bring it within the means of the many. The best work in the English language was unquestionably 'Langstroth on the Honey Bee'; but this, published in America, costs here ten shillings and sixpence. All others that I knew did not explain the various systems and apparatus sufficiently, or were too costly for general use. It was universally acknowledged that the Apiarian Exhibition of 1874 had given an immense impetus to Bee-culture, and I had great hopes that one of our clever and learned Bee-masters would have announced during the following Winter a new Work on the subject, which would fulfil the desired conditions; but the 1 st day of February, 1875, arrived, and I had not heard the wished-for news; so, reluctant to let the Spring appear without the needed help, I resolved, faute de mieux, to attempt the work myself; and, having sought and found a publisher, began and completed the First Edition of this leisure Manual in my leisure evening hours of the same month of February. Excerpt from The Practical Bee Guide: A Manual of Modern Beekeeping The alteration in the title of the guide has been made partly in acknowledgment of the fact that the sale of the book hitherto has not been chiefly in this country, and partly in deference to the wishes of the booksellers and of a large number of practical beekeepers, who have assured me that the former title led to the erroneous impression that the guide was suited only to beekeeping in Ireland. Many new titles were suggested to me: I have adopted one which appears to me to be not extravagant, for, whatever shortcomings the guide may disclose, I think that I may, without immodesty, claim for it that it is essentially practical. Excerpt from The Hive Bee: A Manual of Beekeeping for Hawaii The nature and biology of the bee are of considerable in terest. And a thorough knowledge of the biology is indis pensable to the beekeeper who would succeed with a few or many colonies. Excerpt from The Bee-Keeper's Guide: Or Manual of the Apiary In 1876, in response to a desire frequently expressed by my apiarian friends, principally my students, I published an edition of 3000 copies of the little, unpretending "Manual of the Apiary." This was little more than the course of lectures which I gave annually at the Michigan Agricultural College. In less than two years this was exhausted, and the second edition, enlarged, revised, and much more fully illustrated, was issued. So great was the sale that in less than a year this was followed by the third and fourth editions, and, in less than two years, the fifth edition (seventh thousand) was issued. In each of the two following years, another edition was demanded. In each of these editions the book has been enlarged, changes made, and illustrations added, that the book might keep pace with our rapidly advancing art. So great has been the demand for this work, not only at home and in Europe, but even in more distant lands, and so great has been the progress of spiculture - so changed the views and methods of our best beekeepers - that the author feels warranted in thoroughly revising and entirely recasting this eighth edition (tenth thousand). Not only is the work re-written, but much new matter, and many new and costly illustrations, are added. The above I quote directly from the preface of the eighth edition, published in 1883. Since then four editions have appeared, each revised as the progress of the art required. In electrotyping the eighth edition, through an accident very poor work was done, so that the impressions of the last three editions have been far from satisfactory. This has led me wholly to revise the present, or thirteenth edition. In doing this I have thought it wise to add largely, especially to the scientific portion, as the intelligence of our bee-keepers demands the fullest information. I have thus added one hundred and fifty pages and more than thirty illustrations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Bee-Keeper's Manual: Or Practical Hints on the Management and Complete Preservation of the Honey-Bee Was often found more difficult of accomplish ment than expansion, had this been thought desirable; but brevity throughout has been the aim, so far as seemed consistent with clear explanation and obvious utility. A work on the honey-bee, thus restricted in its object an scope almost entirely to details of a practica.
