Johan Jerg Schuffert was born in 1689 in Langenselbold, Hessen, Germany. His parents were Michael Schuffert and Catharina Gerhard. He married Gertraud Dietrich in 1704. They had seven children. They emigrated in 1733 and settled in Berks County, Pennsylvania. They moved to North Carolina in 1755. Descendants and relatives lived in North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and elsewhere.
