Textbooks have been standard schoolroom fixtures for as long as most living citizens of this country can remember. Many turn-of-the-century students were introduced to reading through the moralistic McGuffey Readers and struggled through the rather drab and colorless pages of volumes on history, geography and civics. In contrast, today's textbooks contain not only narrative content accompanied by colorful photographs and graphics, but also section and chapter exercises that are extended through the use of worksheets and other materials. Moreover, the textbook and its related student materials are packaged together with teacher's editions and tests in grade-level sets that amount to content area programs rather than mere texts.
About 900 references from mostly books and journals to July 1, 1969. This bibliography is intended to serve as an introduction to the literature on the teaching-learning process and on the various new approaches in the field of teaching technology. Entries arranged in broad classified order. No index.
Abstract: Up-to-date, available bibliographies, and journals which review books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials relevant to elementary and secondary school instructional programs are presented. The listing is restricted to reviewing tools published since 1976, except for several standard titles which have not been revised or replaced; on specific topic areas e.g., multiethnic materials. Media sources are presented in 4 principal sections: book selection sources; periodicals; audiovisual materials; and multiethnic materials. A directory of publisher's addresses and an author-title index are included. (wz).
