In 1900 a British motoring enthusiast, F. R. Simms, had the idea of mounting a machine-gun on the front of a quadricycle and installing a small petrol engine at the rear. His machine spurred on others to design similar "war cars", and the armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) was born. This book is the story of subsequent developments, and starts with an authoritative history of all types of AFV from from 1900-1945, covering a wide range of wheeled, tracked and semi-tracked vehicles. From the days before radio communication through to the end of World War II, the author highlights the varied roles AFV's have played, as well as how these adaptable vehicles have evolved and developed over time
Tanks and armoured fighting vehicles have revolutionised modern warfare, dominating the battlefield in conflicts all over the world with their firepower, armour and mobility. Featured in this book are over 900 tanks, armoured personnel carriers, self-propelled guns, reconnaissance vehicles and armoured cars.
The introduction of armored mechanized fighting vehicles by the British Army in 1916 signaled a transition in land warfare tactics. Prior to the employment of armored infantry support vehicles during Battle of the Somme in late summer 1916, a soldier's ability to maneuver on the World War I battlefield was limited by a number of factors. These included the trafficability of terrain, the extent of camouflage and protective cover, the distance between starting point and objective, the complexity of obstacles, and the severity of enemy opposition. By the end of 1914 any possibility of large-scale maneuver had succumbed to the 'battlefield stalemate, ' the maneuver deadlock resulting from the effective use of the Vickers-Maxim machine gun, the creative emplacement of barbed-wire/trench obstacles, and the increasingly accurate employment of high explosive artillery fire.
