A vast literature has grown up around the value distribution theory of meromorphic functions, synthesized by Rolf Nevanlinna in the 1920s and singled out by Hermann Weyl as one of the greatest mathematical achievements of this century. The multidimensional aspect, involving the distribution of inverse images of analytic sets under holomorphic mappings of complex manifolds, has not been fully treated in the literature. This volume thus provides a valuable introduction to multivariate value distribution theory and a survey of some of its results, rich in relations to both algebraic and differential geometry and surely one of the most important branches of the modern geometric theory of functions of a complex variable. Since the book begins with preparatory material from the contemporary geometric theory of functions, only a familiarity with the elements of multidimensional complex analysis is necessary background to understand the topic. After proving the two main theorems of value distribution theory, the author goes on to investigate further the theory of holomorphic curves and to provide generalizations and applications of the main theorems, focusing chiefly on the work of Soviet mathematicians.
This comprehensive book, rich with applications, offers a quantitative framework for the analysis of the various capture-recapture models for open animal populations, while also addressing associated computational methods. The state of our wildlife populations provides a litmus test for the state of our environment, especially in light of global warming and the increasing pollution of our land, seas, and air. In addition to monitoring our food resources such as fisheries, we need to protect endangered species from the effects of human activities (e.g. rhinos, whales, or encroachments on the habitat of orangutans). Pests must be be controlled, whether insects or viruses, and we need to cope with growing feral populations such as opossums, rabbits, and pigs. Accordingly, we need to obtain information about a given population’s dynamics, concerning e.g. mortality, birth, growth, breeding, sex, and migration, and determine whether the respective population is increasing , static, or declining. There are many methods for obtaining population information, but the most useful (and most work-intensive) is generically known as “capture-recapture,” where we mark or tag a representative sample of individuals from the population and follow that sample over time using recaptures, resightings, or dead recoveries. Marks can be natural, such as stripes, fin profiles, and even DNA; or artificial, such as spots on insects. Attached tags can, for example, be simple bands or streamers, or more sophisticated variants such as radio and sonic transmitters. To estimate population parameters, sophisticated and complex mathematical models have been devised on the basis of recapture information and computer packages. This book addresses the analysis of such models. It is primarily intended for ecologists and wildlife managers who wish to apply the methods to the types of problems discussed above, though it will also benefit researchers and graduate students in ecology. Familiarity with basic statistical concepts is essential.
Inverse problems of spectral analysis deal with the reconstruction of operators of the specified form in Hilbert or Banach spaces from certain of their spectral characteristics. An interest in spectral problems was initially inspired by quantum mechanics. The main inverse spectral problems have been solved already for Schrödinger operators and for their finite-difference analogues, Jacobi matrices. This book treats inverse problems in the theory of small oscillations of systems with finitely many degrees of freedom, which requires finding the potential energy of a system from the observations of its oscillations. Since oscillations are small, the potential energy is given by a positive definite quadratic form whose matrix is called the matrix of potential energy. Hence, the problem is to find a matrix belonging to the class of all positive definite matrices. This is the main difference between inverse problems studied in this book and the inverse problems for discrete analogues of the Schrödinger operators, where only the class of tridiagonal Hermitian matrices are considered.
This book describes visual perception and control methods for robotic systems that need to interact with the environment. Multiple view geometry is utilized to extract low-dimensional geometric information from abundant and high-dimensional image information, making it convenient to develop general solutions for robot perception and control tasks. In this book, multiple view geometry is used for geometric modeling and scaled pose estimation. Then Lyapunov methods are applied to design stabilizing control laws in the presence of model uncertainties and multiple constraints.
Building on classical queueing theory mainly dealing with single node queueing systems, networks of queues, or stochastic networks has been a field of intensive research over the last three decades. Whereas the first breakthrough in queueing network theory was initiated by problems and work in operations research, the second breakthrough, as well as subsequent major work in the area, was closely related to computer science, particularly to performance analysis of complex systems in computer and communication science. The text reports on recent research and development in the area. It is centered around explicit expressions for the steady behavior of discrete time queueing networks and gives a moderately positive answer to the question of whether there can be a product form calculus in discrete time. Originating from a course given by the author at Hamburg University, this book is ideally suited as a text for courses on discrete time stochastic networks.
I.M. Gelfand (1913 - 2009), one of the world's leading contemporary mathematicians, largely determined the modern view of functional analysis with its numerous relations to other branches of mathematics, including mathematical physics, algebra, topology, differential geometry and analysis. In this three-volume Collected Papers Gelfand presents a representative sample of his work. Gelfand's research led to the development of remarkable mathematical theories - most of which are now classics - in the field of Banach algebras, infinite-dimensional representations of Lie groups, the inverse Sturm-Liouville problem, cohomology of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras, integral geometry, generalized functions and general hypergeometric functions. The corresponding papers form the major part of the collection. Some articles on numerical methods and cybernetics as well as a few on biology are also included.
