On September 15, 1873, the doors of the school were Opened for the admission oi students and the beginning of educational work. The purpose of the Founder to provide for the academic instruction and moral training of the youth of the com munity Is most fitly expressed in his own words: Being deeply impressed With the Importance of increasing popular facilities for the intellectual and moral culture, and especially for the Christian edu cation of youth, I would lay the foundation of an enterprise for affording instruction not only in the ordinary branches of literature and science, but also in regard to the great end and business of life. The work in Physics is pursued during the senior year of the Scientific course, being purposely deferred to the last year, in order that the student may have become familiar with the methods of algebra and geometry. This permits the course to be adapted to the highest entrance requirements of universities' for-their scientific and technological courses. In addition to the regular daily recitations, two and one-half hours per week of laboratory work, Which is largely quantitative, are required of each student who pursues this subject.
