It has long been recognised that there is an apparently paradoxical relationship between the revolutionary poetic style developed by Yeats, Eliot and Pound in the period during and after the First World War, and the reactionary politics with which they were associated in the 1920s and 1930s. Concentrating on their writings in the period up to the 1930s, this study, first published in 1982, helps to resolve the paradox and also provides a much needed reappraisal of the factors influencing their poetic and political development. The work of these poets has usually been seen as deriving from the tradition of continental symbolist poetics. Michael North offers a subtle reading of the issues by linking aesthetic modernism with an attempt in all these writers to resolve basic contradictions in modern liberalism. Though Yeats, Eliot, and Pound certainly attempted to resolve in art problems that could not be resolved in actuality, their very attempt resulted in a politicized aesthetic, one that confessed their inability to do so. The book includes accounts of the specific political activities of the three writers, reinterpretations of their critical theories in light of their politics, and rereadings of some of their major works, including The Tower, The Waste Land, and Pisan Cantos.
