Because of its rich coal heritage and breathtaking scenery, many regard Wyoming County as the hidden gem of southern West Virginia. The county's vibrant history began with Native Americans, whom many believe left behind the petroglyphs that attract national attention, and continued to its early residents, who farmed and flourished in the logging industry. In 1906, when the Deepwater Railroad (later the Virginian) came to the town of Mullens, Wyoming County's role as a provider of the nation's natural resources was strengthened. John Cooke was born in London in about 1752. His parents may have been John Cook and Elizabeth Gurney. He emigrated in about 1767. He married Nellie Pemberton in about 1775. They lived in Virginia and had five children. Nellie died in 1812 and John married Anne Keatley Hendrix 29 June 1813. He died in Wyoming County, West Virginia in 1832. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in West Virginia.
Thomas Rutherfoord (1766-1852) emigrated in 1784 from Scotland to Richmond, Virginia, as representative for the mercantile firm of Hawksley and Rutherfoord of Dublin, Ireland. Thomas sold the goods he brought, returned to Ireland to settle accounts and become a partner, and then returned to Richmond in 1789. In 1790 he married Sarah Winston. Descendants (chiefly spelling the surname Rutherford) and relatives lived in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, California, Washington and elsewhere. Includes much ancestry and relatives in Scotland, and some in Ireland, England, India and elsewhere in the British empire.
