This new series, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, presents various aspects of trends, problems and policy issues related to the development of small and medium-sized enterprises in transition countries. SMEs represent an important source for growth and new jobs in market economies worldwide, but in transition economies they remain perhaps an untapped potential. For women, in particular, there is a gender gap in setting up such businesses, and the UNECE Programme on Womens Entrepreneurship aims to raise awareness of the various problems associated in establishing a business. This present volume includes selected papers prepared for the First Forum of Women Entrepreneurs, offers an overview of the situation and problems they face; outlines country experiences, and discusses the importance of networks and the global digital economy.
Entrepreneurship is a key element in the development of market based economies and one of the potential drivers of change in countries that are in the process of transformation to market based systems. This book describes and critically assesses the nature and extent of female entrepreneurship in European economies that until 1990 were operating under central planning. At the core of the book are 7 country based chapters which provide an overview of the development of entrepreneurship and small firms since 1990, including a review of the institutional and policy context; an assessment of the role of women within the society during the socialist period; and any major changes afterwards. Each chapter also includes a thematic section (each one addressing a different issue) based on unique empirical data drawn from original research.
The commonly held perception is that businesses owned by women in the Middle East and North Africa are small and informal, that they're less sophisticated, and that they're huddled in low-value-added sectors. In fact, as The Environment for Women's Entrepreneurship in the Middle East and North Africa shows, there is very little difference between mail- and female-owned firms. Female-owned firms in the region are as well-established, productive, technologically savvy, and connected to global markets as male-owned firms. Although there are many similar characteristics and performance levels between male- and female-owned firms in the region, the book notes that women's entrepreneurship isn't reaching its potential, despite an investment climate that is much less gendered than suspected. With a significant increase in women's education level-in 11 out of 18 countries in the region women outnumber men in universities-and the strong economic rights women have in Islam, women's entrepreneurship can become a far greater engine for growth and diversification than expected in the past. This potential needs to be exploited vigorously. Reforming the investment climate to benefit all players is one important action. The second would be to remove or mitigate hurdles to their economic and social empowerment.

One of the strengths of this book lies in the admirable literature reviews throughout the volume. The authors reviews vast amounts of literature on women entrepreneurs, and more specifically, studies involving women minority entrepreneurs. The nature of this task should not be underestimated, given the ever-expanding academic field of entrepreneurship and women s entrepreneurship in particular. I read this book as an academic, and would argue that it is of most use for academics (students and professors), and provides an up-to-date and well-researched portrait of women entrepreneurs in the USA and beyond. . . this book fills an important gap in the literature, not only because there is a growing population of women entrepreneurs, but also because of the growing number of minority women entering entrepreneurship.
