Over the centuries, the art establishment has turned a deaf ear to the voices of women artists. These women were not silent, however, but constantly struggling to articulate their experience. Girolamo Savonarola (1452–1498), the religious reformer, preacher, and Florentine civic leader, was burned at the stake as a false prophet by the order of Pope Alexander VI.
