Women, visibility and morality in Kenyan popular media explores familiar constructions of femininity to assess ways in which it circulates in discourse, both stereotypically and otherwise. It assesses the meanings of such discourses and their articulations in various public platforms in Kenya. The book draws together theoretical questions on ‘pre-convened’ scripts that contain or condition how women can circulate in public. The book asks questions about particular interpretations of women’s bodies that are considered transgressive or unruly and why these bodies become significant symbolic sites for the generation of knowledge on morality and sexuality. The book also poses questions about genre and representations of femininity. The assertion made is that for knowledges of femininity to circulate effectively, they must be melodramatic, spectacular and scandalous. Ultimately, the book asks how such a theorisation of popular modes of representation enable a better understanding of the connections between gender, sexuality and violence in Kenya.
The author examines the impact of colonialism and the cash economy on the Nandi, a semi-pastoral and patrilineal people of western Kenya, emphasizing changes in women's and men's economic roles and their respective relations to property and to each other. Since the sex roles associated with production and property relations are linked to sex roles in other areas - in the marriage system, husband-wife relations, kinship, cultural ideals of male and female, ritual relations, participation in community affairs - these areas are also analyzed. The author asks whether the changes in Nandi society have been favorable or unfavorable to women. Has their economic position improved or declined as a result of colonialism and socioeconomic change? Has sexual stratification increased or decreased? How have different categories of women - wives, widows, never-married women, participants in woman-woman marriages - been differently affected by changed circumstances? Although most of the book is ethnographic in nature, providing a detailed account of Nandi inter-gender roles in the context of economic history and at the processes that have induced changes in the respective roles of men and women.

Booth looks closely at the operation of two clinics for sexually transmitted diseases in Nairobi, Kenya, and explores how internationally funded and nationally sanctioned interventions to stop the spread of HIV have focused almost exclusively on the sexual and reproductive behaviors of those who are least able to challenge male power and dominance -- working-class and poor women. Moving past the current politics of development, women's health, and AIDS prevention, Booth's work enhances our understanding of how globalized and local networks, power relationships, ideologies, and social practices contribute to the current AIDS crisis. This bold and important book reveals conceptual flaws in AIDS prevention policy and will inspire new ideas for dealing with this deadly epidemic in Kenya, Africa, and beyond.
Gender and Education in Kenya explores the intersections of curriculum, pedagogy, policy, and gender.
