This volume presents a collection of original papers at the intersection of philosophy, the history of science, cultural and theatrical studies. Based on a series of case studies on the 17th century, it contributes to an understanding of the role played by instruments at the interface of science and art. The papers pursue the hypothesis that the development and construction of instruments make a substantive contribution to the opening of new fields of knowledge, the development of new cultural practices, but also to the delineation of particular genres, methods, and disciplines. This perspective leads the authors to reflect anew on what actually defines an instrument and to develop a series of basic questions to determine what an instrument is - which actions does the instrument incorporate? – which actions does the instrument make possible? - when do the objects of examination themselves become instruments? – what skills are required to use an instrument, which skills does it produce? With its combination of new theoretical models and historical case studies, its detailed demonstration of the mutual influence of art and science with the instrument as the point of intersection, this volume enters new territory. It is of great value for all those interested in the history of our perception of instruments. Doch neuere Wissenschaftstheorien hinterfragen den Wahrheitsanspruch und damit die traditionelle Legitimation wissenschaftlicher Aussagen durch den Verweis auf die Abhängigkeit jeder Wissensproduktion von kulturell und historisch spezifischen epistemologischen, institutionellen, politischen und ökonomischen Machtverhältnissen, im globalen Kontext wächst der Unmut über die hegemoniale Macht westlicher techno-wissenschaftlicher Denknormen auf Kosten nicht-westlicher Wissensbestände und Praktiken. Andererseits beruhen weitreichende politische Entscheidungen zunehmend auf Expertenwissen, zum Beispiel in der Klima- und Energiepolitik. Almost everything we do is based on our knowledge of the world around us: how we dress in the morning, how we go about our work, how we interact with other people – all these things rest on our understanding of how we know life. Knowledge might be seen as the most central as well as the most under-researched trait of social life: we mainly think of knowledge as either technical (scientific knowledge) or formal (as bestowed by academic education). The things that we know are obscured in our everyday routines, not revealing their true status as "known" – until critical moments demand it. This book establishes a fundamentally social understanding of knowledge. Knowledge is re-embedded into the discussion of how we, as individuals and groups, and as a modern society produce and reproduce knowledge as the foundation of our lives. Knowledge is approached as a societal phenomenon, as we uncover the ingredients and settings in which knowledge is produced and put to use.
