Wilton Park was established in 1946 as part of an initiative to help re-establish peace and democracy in Europe. Since then, it has developed a unique status as an academically independent Executive Agency of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). It has become one of the world's leading institutions for discussion of international issues and policy challenges. In 2004-05, the agency's income was over £3.68 million; and it held a total of 58 conferences, involving over 3,700 participants from government, business and the media, non-governmental organisations, think-tanks and universities, and drawn from a wide range of countries.
