Duer asks Knox for a loan of a check for six hundred Dollars, which Duer will return to Knox the following Saturday. J. Geary signed on verso for receipt of the check for William Duer.
Signed and initialed by Knox. This appears to be a copy of two letters that Knox sent to Duer on 17 June and 19 June. On June 19, Knox told Duer to pay a [dollar sign] 2,500 note 33 days after the date to the firm of Shaw and Randall. On June 17 he had told Duer to pay a [dollar sign] 2,500 note in 60 days. This document relates to the notes worth [dollar sign] 5,000 Knox has recently corresponded with Thomas Randall about (refer to GLC02437.05006).
Asks Knox to lend him money and forwards him a receipt.
Reports that this letter will be delivered by Madame de la Val and Mr. de la Roche who will communicate provisional articles I have Enterd into with them for commencing a French Establishment on the Lands we have purchased. Says the present state of France ought not to be neglected and while the Climate of the Tract we have purchased may not be so Congenial to the French, as the Scots. Believes the Scots will become large purchasers of land in their tract and All that is necessary is to give a Reputation to the Affair in the first Instance. Believes the purchase in question will provide the reputation they desire. Will write more fully on the purchase in another letter. Wants to give facilities and advantages to the first purchasers. While it might be expensive, Duer thinks it is worth it. If Knox approves he will get a loan to pay for it. Has not thought of the Scioto purchase other than to worry about covering my Disbursements.
Asks to borrow [dollar sign] 5000 for ninety days, per Smith's offer in a previous letter. Will provide a note endorsed by either Mr. [William] Duer or Captain [Thomas] Randall in which he promises to follow specific terms of repayment. Begs his prompt attention to the matter, and hopes to be able to secure the amount by the following Saturday.
Acknowledges receipt of an invitation from Duer. Confirms that he and Henry Jackson will meet Duer at Princeton next Wednesday evening. Asks him to bring Mr. [William] Constable.
Informs Knox he will provide Morris (either Gouverneur or Robert) with a receipt for Knox's note. Says Morris will show Knox Duer's letter to Alexander Hamilton. Notes he would have written a longer letter if it wasn't for his old Complaint that affects his writing.
Ledger outlines accounts between Duer and Knox from 1791-1792.
Urges Knox to conclude the financial agreement between them, as it is Essential to [Duer's] present relief. Encloses correspondence between himself and William Green.
