The preference of white flies to the four hosts: tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. var Carla), pepper (Capsicum annuum grossum L. var. Clovis), cucumber {Cucumis sativa L. var. Celebrity) and okra {Hibiscus esculentus L. var. Clemson spineless) was studied under field, greenhouse, and laboratory conditions. Bemisia tabaci, the sweet potato whitefly was the only species identified on the mentioned crops in this study. Host preference in greenhouse and field experiments was measured by counting the number of living immatures per leaf area. The mean number of living immatures/cm2 was significantly higher on cucumber than other crops under both field and greenhouse conditions. There were no significant differences among the populations of whitefly immatures on tomato, pepper and okra under greenhouse conditions. In the field, tomato and okra were found to be of medium preferability to the insect while pepper was the least preferred host. In the laboratory, host preference was assessed as the number of adult whiteflies attracted to the leaves of hosts placed in cages. Results have indicated that the mean number of attracted adult whiteflies was significantly higher on tomato and pepper than on cucumber and okra leaves. Leaves of host plants used in the laboratory experiment were analyzed for their nitrogen content using Kjeldahl method. Results have shown that cucumber have had significantly higher N-content than other crops ; a slightly negative correlation has been found indicating that as the nitrogen content of the leaves decreased, the number of attracted adult whiteflies increased. Based on this study, cucumber is proposed as a trap crop in future Integrated Pest Management programs of vegetables under field and greenhouse conditions in Lebanon.
