"Bursting with wise observations." -- J. Courtney Sullivan, author of The Engagements and Maine "Gleams like a jewel." -- The Philadelphia Inquirer "Stunning. . . Unique and unforgettable." -- Glamour Hailed as one of the best books of 2014 by The Philadelphia Inquirer, Elise Juska's The Blessings is a moving novel about a tight-knit Irish Catholic clan over the course of twenty years. The Blessings rally around one another in times of celebration and those of sorrow, coming together for departures and arrivals, while its members harbor private struggles and moments of personal joy. College student Abby ponders homesickness in her first semester away from her Philadelphia home, while her cousin Stephen commits a petty act of violence that takes a surprising turn, and their aunt Lauren faces a crisis in her storybook marriage she could never have foreseen. Through the lens of one unforgettable family, this beautifully moving novel explores how our families define us and how we shape them in return.
What Did I Do to Deserve This? I was wondering this one day in prayer and was even bold enough to ask. Lord, I’m a good person, really—what did I do to deserve this? I even listed my good qualities to my Father because He seemed to need to be reminded. I only asked because I felt like I needed a reassuring word of how much God loves me or, how special I am to Him, or that these rough times would be coming to an end shortly. So, God in His wisdom and understanding of my self-pity and lack of inner-confidence at this moment took me to Hebrews 12:5 “And have you quite forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you, His child?” Look here, God was ready to encourage me, His child. How awesome is He? “He said, ‘My son (daughter), don’t be angry when the Lord punishes you. Don’t be discouraged when He has to show you where you are wrong.’” What? I don’t get it. Exactly, I didn’t get it. That was why I had to pray, Lord: don’t let me miss it. He was going to make sure that I didn’t miss it so that I could receive the full blessings of being a child of God. “Where Are My Blessings is written in a direct and challenging style to inspire those seeking a deeper and more intimate relationship with Jesus. The author writes in a conversational style encouraging the Believer not to ‘miss it!’ Whether or not you are going through tough times, or you are currently in a better place, Where Are My Blessings clearly teaches how to live a life that is not all about you, but all about Him!” —Larry Hoekman, seminar speaker, counselor, and devotional blogger

In My Grandfather's Blessings, Rachel Naomi Remen, a cancer physician and master storyteller, uses her luminous stories to remind us of the power of our kindness and the joy of being alive. Dr. Remen's grandfather, an orthodox rabbi and scholar of the Kabbalah, saw life as a web of connection and knew that everyone belonged to him, and that he belonged to everyone. He taught her that blessing one another is what fills our emptiness, heals our loneliness, and connects us more deeply to life. Life has given us many more blessings than we have allowed ourselves to receive. My Grandfather's Blessings is about how we can recognize and receive our blessings and bless the life in others. Serving others heals us. Through our service we will discover our own wholeness—and the way to restore hidden wholeness in the world.
