S. Y. Agnon is Israel’s most celebrated author and the only Israeli writer to have received the Noble Prize for Literature, which he received in 1966. His novels and short stories deal with the traditional Jewish way of life and its interaction with twentieth century European and Western living. This book uses Carl Gustav Jung’s theory of archetypes as a method of analysis of the Jewish archetypes found in Agnon’s novel, The Bridal Canopy. It serves as a practical guide to the application of psychological theory to a modern novel. As such, it heightens the literary sensitivity of the reader, and serves as a tool for a psychological perspective on the depths of the universal human soul.
Shmuel Yosef Agnon (1888-1970), winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1966 and the undisputed master of the Hebrew novel, still remains largely an unknown or even misunderstood figure. Agnon's innovation was to construct an intricate dialectic between Hebrew tradition and the modern predicament, thereby producing a very distinctive mode of modernist narrative. To a large degree, In Mr. Lublin's Store sums up Agnon's thematic and formal development. This novel is also a prime example of an objective correlative for a world that is out of joint--a world where a plot is no longer possible because impersonal forces deriving from the setting where it takes place, Germany, no longer permit development of a normal plot. Only the components of the place, which determine the fate of many individuals who live there, can be described. The entire tradition has been undermined, although many of the characters yearn for it in their nostalgia for the shtetl of their birth. However, there is no hope of returning home; there is no chance to rebuild the fallen tabernacle of the tradition.
